Funding for the Power of YOU.
In the legislative session that ended Sunday night, May 18, the Power of YOU program received $600,000 for scholarships. The Governor is expected to sign the big budget deficit bill which includes Power of YOU funding.
Thank you to students, faculty and staff. Your voices were heard at the Capitol and your support made a significant difference. In three months, we came from no legislation to statutory language for Power of YOU scholarships. There is, however, more work to do next year. The funding we received is not permanent. (This was a late breaking change.)
Thanks again for your support. This is a very important start to permanent funding for the Power of YOU.
Power of YOU goes to the Capitol.
On March 27, more than 100 Power of YOU students from MCTC and St. Paul College attended a funding hearing for the Power of YOU program at the State Capitol. MCTC President Phil Davis and MCTC Power of YOU student Jasmine McConnell were two of the people who testified.
To learn more about the history of the Power of YOU and the request for funding, read President Davis' Community Voices piece that appeared on minnpost.com and POY student Jasmine McConnell's speech that she gave at the hearing.
