What is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered and directive method to enhance motivation to change. Developed in the addictions field, it has proven effective in reducing substance abuse and related problems. For additional information about MI, visit www.motivationalinterview.org.

Why should I be trained in Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing moves counselors away from aggressive or confrontational approaches and towards bringing about change. MI training provides you with an opportunity to practice the subtle balance between its directive and client-centered approaches. Training will help you to:

CONFIRMATION
Confirmation letters will be sent for all registrations received at least one week in advance. We cannot guarantee that yourletter will reach you before your class date. You are welcome to call us to confirm your registration. If you register online, you can print your confirmation during the registration process.

CHANGES AND CANCELLATIONS
You may cancel your registration or switch to another session no fewer than 5 business days prior to your training date. A $10 fee is charged for cancellations, date changes, or participant substitutions. Refunds will not be granted after the 5-business-day deadline, or for non-attendance.

Continuing Education

This course was developed specifically to meet the requirements for continuing education for alcohol and drug counselors, social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, crisis counselors, nursing and allied health professionals. Participants will earn 16 contact hours / 1.6 CEUs for attendance in the two-day program.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) helps people meet their basic needs by providing or administering health care coverage, economic assistance and a variety of services for Minnesotans. The Chemical Health and Mental Health Divisions are responsible for defining statewide policy in their fields, planning broad-based community service systems, evaluating the effectiveness of services, and funding innovative programs. State Operated Services (SOS) is the provider arm of DHS and consists of an array of campus and community-based programs serving people with mental illness, developmental disabilities, chemical dependency and traumatic brain injury.

Metropolitan State University’s B.S. degree in Alcohol and Drug Counseling is the largest educational program for chemical dependency counselors in Minnesota. The goal of the Alcohol & Drug Counseling major is to improve the delivery of chemical dependency services and thereby produce better outcomes for people who suffer from substance abuse problems.

Minneapolis Community & Technical College (MCTC) established one of the first programs in the nation to train chemical dependency counselors. MCTC has provided continuing education and customized training for chemical dependency professionals and facilities for more than 30 years.
